GUATEMALAN GENES @ COLORADO LATIN AMERICA HERITAGE CAMP

I wish you could see me jumping up and down as I share with you that I will be presenting at the 2010 Latin America Heritage Camp in Colorado!!!

"Latin American Heritage Camp in Colorado is one of the few camps of its kind in the country, designed specifically for families with children adopted from Central and South America, as well as those of Latino heritage adopted within the United States. It is one of ten camps facilitated by the highly respected Colorado Heritage Camps, Inc."

The plan is to give a 1 hour 15 minute workshop and also a meeting/presentation with parents with teenager girls on how to plan a Quinceañera.

The workshop`s topic is not yet defined, I need your help!!! This year`s topic is Latin American Adventures. Some ideas I have are:

1. Semana Santa, this is the number one holiday in Guatemala: a mosaic of the traditions, food, history, etc wrapping up making a traditional sawdust rug.

2. A flight over the country showcasing all the natural diversity: The jungle and rainforest North, the desert East, the highlands West, the tropical forest and Beach South and build a map as the hands on activity.

3. Guatemalan`s textiles by region, how they are made, etc

4. Guatemala today, universities, schools, hospitals, political and economic situation, what young people do, opportunities to serve, employment, etc...

WHAT DO YOU THINK????

Thanks for the info about the heritage camp - I've bookmarked it for further use.
I love the Semana Santa idea since it is something that fascinates me personally. :)

All the topics sound to great to choose. I don't think you can go wrong. This looks great. We can't do it this year but hopefully we'll see you there in a year or two.

Thanks for the info about the camp. I know we won't be able to go this year but I have bookmarked it for next year. I really like the Semana Santa idea and making the alfombra. I would also love to learn about all of the adventures that Guatemala has to offer. Congrats on being chosen as a speaker!

I've been reading your blog for a while but never posted. :) This will be our 3rd year attending LAHC. You will love it and so will your kids (if they get to go.) Good luck, you will be in good hands.

What a great idea to speak about nature, culture and diversity. Even though I am a big fan of the holy week celebration in Guatemala, specially in Antigua Guatemala, I think that is one of the features people know better.
I follow your blog through Networked blogs in Facebook and I have to tell you how much I enjoy it.

I think you should try to talk about the last topic -- schools, young people etc. in Guatemala -- and only then talk about more traditional topics. Culture camps are wonderful but they often don't deal with the "here and now."

And most importantly, felicidades! I hope you'll speak at other culture camps in the future as well!

As one of the directors of Latin American Heritage Camp and I'm so excited that you're coming!! I personally love ALL your ideas and don't think you can go wrong. Our theme this year is "Latin American Adventures", so I think one of the first two is more "adventurous", but I'm hoping you'll get hooked and want to come back, because we've always talked about a discussion on what is current. Can't wait to meet you in JUNE!!

I think that Semana Santa might be more familiar to everyone. But, a combination of number 2 (starting with an "overview") and then zooming into the current culture "on-the-ground" could be fascinating! Hoping we can figure out how to get there this year or next!
