GUATEMALAN GENES

This blog is the description of my country, Guatemala. A description of its people, its traditions, its folklore, its food, etc. The inspiration came from the desire of giving my friend and her two adoptive children from Guatemala a source to explore their roots. I am writing this for her, for her beautiful children and for all the many other American families like hers.

MAZATENANGO - LAND OF DEER

Mazatenango, the 'cabecera' -capital- of Suchitepequez, means  land of deer: Mazate - deer, nango-land. The name was given by the Nahuatl people who came with the Spanish from what now is Mexico.

In the picture the recently built fountain in a rotunda that created traffic confusion since nobody knew who had the right of way.

I have two adopted daughters from Guatemala. Maria is from Mazatenago and Carolina is from Amatitlan. We went back to visit this summer. What a treat for Maria to see your post on her birthplace.
